Standard Foil Fencing Tournament - May 7 in Medford

SOFC and the "Fencing in Southern Oregon" program will host on Saturday, May 7, a standard (non-electric) foil fencing tournament.  We expect this to be the final local tournament of the 2010-11 fencing year.

Three events are planned:

-   Youth Beginners, check-in time 9:00 a.m.  This is for fencers age 12 or under who began fencing since September 2010 or have fenced in no more than two SOFC terms.

-   Age 13-and-Under, check-in time 10:30 a.m.   This is for all skill levels.

-   OPEN, check-in time 1:00 p.m.   This is for all ages and skill levels.

The registration form is attached.   You may submit it up to the close of check-in, but please let Steve know if you plan to fence to help with our planning.  (An email is fine.)

Plan to fence on Saturday, May 7!

Steve and Ron

Seven fencers from SOFC competed over the weekend at the US Fencing Association's North America Cup competition in Portland.  The tournament was one of the top half-dozen annual fencing events in the U.S., attracting fencers from across the nation and internationally.

Senior (adult) events were Division I (the USFA's top level), joined by youth Y-10, Y-12 and Y-14 events, as well as senior team and wheelchair competition.

SOFC fencers were led by Sarah Holst who took 13th place overall in Division I women's epee.  Seeded 42nd going in (as the event's top-ranked "B" rated fencer) and seeded 18th after a successful pool round against tough competition, Sarah narrowly missed the top 8 by falling 15-9 to the fencer who eventually tied for third overall.

Lindee Newman finished 29th among age-14-and-under women's epee fencers, third among Oregon fencers.  Seeded 43rd both going in and after the pool round, Lindee defeated the 22nd seed before falling 15-9 to the fencer who ended up 2nd overall.

Ceili Widmann finished 39th in women's Y-14 epee, advancing from her initial #59 seeding.

Nicoletta Dinelli took 33th in the smaller Y-12 women's saber event.
Daniel Salcido finished 56th among 107 Y-14 men's epee fencers.
Matt Cramer finished 62nd among 123 Y-14 men's foilists.
Mirco Dinelli finished 66th among 123 Y-14 men's saber fencers.

Special thanks to Ron Kilby, Wes Coffel and Sarah Holst for their much appreciated coaching during the four-day event.
